I imagine if I lived in a “fun house”. Hubby would be more apt to participate in chores, listen more intently, maybe even clean more vigorously.
There’s been a video circulating around Facebook recently that really got me thinking…
Watch below so you can follow my train of thought.
As you can see, proper execution of “The Fun Theory” does indeed work.
(Imagine how much healthier we’d all be if we had piano stairs everywhere that motivated people to chose stairs over escalators. Although, I suppose they couldn’t be “everywhere” since that would take away the “specialness” of it. Anyhow, I digress…)
Now, back to Hubby.
What if I could apply The Fun Theory in my own home? And, therefore, ensure that hubby has FUN doing things around the house. I bet that would change EVERYTHING! I mean after all, I saw how excited he got when we bought our new fridge. What?? Excited about a new fridge, you ask? Well, yes… he got excited about our new fridge — not only cause it’s freakin’ huge, but also because it has LED lights that are so bright you can see it from the moon. (you can read more about this in my other blog here: Bright Lights Eclipse Frugal Spending). It makes the fridge “FUN”!
So, I’ve compiled a list of things that I could possibly modify to provide a fun experience at home. Let me know if you have any suggestions of your own.
- Every trash can would make a “swooshing” sound every time you deposit something (nothing but net baby!)
- When the toilet seat is securely closed, audio would play of the crowd going wild
- The interior of the toilet would have a tiny picture of his boss’ face to ensure accuracy
- There would be a television placed in the laundry room.. that only keeps playing if there are clothes being put-in-to or taken-out-of the washer/dryer (this would be the only TV that gets the NFL network)
- The walls of the shower would be wired with LED lights that would change color when scrubbing/cleaning pressure is applied (maybe “clean” would get closer to “clean”?)
- Moving the vacuum back and forth would be just like strumming a guitar… there would be colored buttons for different notes (AND.. to keep him completely interested… it would be compatible with PlayStation & all Guitar Hero DVDs)
I’m quite certain there are other ways I could adapt my home… I’d just need to give it some more thought.
I’m willing to bet that the The Fun Theory could be a very valuable tool in “Hubby Training”. Spend some time thinking about this….. I’m sure you’ll agree!
We all know how much men love to be entertained….. it’s about time we put their love of bells & whistles to good use!
You can now follow me on Twitter…. just click below!
Ha ha, pretty funny babe. However don’t forget that after you climb the piano stairs a few times, the novelty will diminish. Eventually its just an energy sucking flight of stairs that also makes annoying noises every time you use it.
surely if you think real hard there are other ways you could motivate me to do the things I don’t like doing.
love ya

How smart of you to see these areas as challenges instead of irritations. Good husbands are hard to find, (believe me I know. I went through a couple before I found a real keeper) and little irritations are just that . . . little. Especially compared with the mountain of fine things a good husband contributes to life.

My daughter was a gymnast and had this wonderful idea. Why not replace all the floors in school with trampolines. Besides the exercise, imagine the fun kids would have bouncing down the halls from class to class.

OK, now this is inspired — but what kind of “fun” do you think our significant others would envision if they applied the “fun theory” to activities they hoped to encourage us to do more frequently?

Great ideas. You actually should register them, immediately, because at least a couple of them could make you some serious money. I think you’d have to change them often though, because once the novelty wears off, we humans will go back to leaving down the toilet seat or taking the stairs. We are creatures of comfort. That’s just how we are and it isn’t just men. Sorry! Very funny post. Congrats on being FP’D!

This is so true, and it reminds me of the cool campaign in Sweden where you’re rewarded for throwing your waste in the bin by various sounds. Here’s a video link, if you’d like to see that in action:

Congrats on a nod for a very funny and well-needed discussion. Having been a teacher, I can tell you that “fun” is highly prized by well-meaning administrators. I agree that making something “fun” is beneficial for students; however, we started noticing that the second something didn’t meet their standard of “fun,” they tuned out almost automatically. It became expected, a prerequisite for learning, rather than a treat. We can get overloaded on fun; trust me. I’ve survived enough homecoming weeks to prove that true. That being said, I would love trying to play something by running up and down those stairs!
Fun, like everything, is indeed wonderful…in moderation! Great post!

How about song contests for each task? Winner gets…whatever you want to negotiate: back rub, breakfast in bed?
For example for washing I can think of “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right out Of my Hair.” Actually, though, I can’t think of one single other song having to do with one single other chore.
Scrap THAT idea!

You could give him an angle grinder in the morning, then ask him to do something fun and manly, like cut stone. Then tell him you’re going out and will be back, oh, around 6pm or so.
When he creates the inevitable dust storm, he’ll have to work himself into a frenzy dusting, washing, polishing and dusting some more if he’s to remove all the evidence before 6pm.
I speak from experience.
And no, I didn’t manage the 6pm deadline!

There is, of course, another side to this story…
One lady I work with was lamenting that her sons never put their dirty laundry in the basket. One of the guys asked “Does the hamper have a lid?”
“Of course!”
“Take off the lid.”
“No.”
“Even better, put it in a corner with a basketball hoop above it. They won’t rest until ALL the laundry is in the basket.”
“No Way. I’m not doing that.”
“Then you’re not really interested in solving the problem; you’re interested in imposing YOUR idea of order on the rest of the universe. Good luck with that.”

I once suggested covering men’s bathroom water knobs with boob-shapes, so people would wash their hands. You’d be surprised by the amount of men who don’t wash their hands.

Great idea Admin. Best of luck if you are planning to implement the idea in your house! I have doubts about the working of idea coz men are designed fussy and will behave bizarre over the time and in varying rational and emotional contexts. In a short time fun will become norm and lose the “specialness” attribute. at the end of day fun theory will buy you some time for “Hubby training” project.
