The symbol of all things sacred, the visible bond that keeps you together, an endless circle of love and ALSO……a fantastic toss and retrieve toy for the pool!
YES! You read that correctly! There’s obviously nothing better to toss into a pool than a shiny, tiny, “retrievable” wedding band.
Or so hubby thought last summer.
I’ll start by explaining that I’m really not a mushy girl, hubby doesn’t own a million dollar wedding band, and in all honesty this really is just a piece of jewelry that, ironically enough, seems to perform a number of functions. Since this probably makes no sense to you…. Please let me explain……
If you’re anything like me, you have your head cocked sideways, there’s a quizzical look on your face and you’re wondering why, oh why, would someone take off their wedding ring and toss it into a pool? But what you don’t realize is that, in the male mind, the wedding ring is FAR MORE than just a symbol of love.
A wedding ring is also a TOY that’s always with them, in case they feel the need to play with something (don’t let your mind go there!) when nothing else is readily available.
- I’ve seen the “Master Ring Spinner” – husbands who skillfully spin their rings on a flat surface only to try to stop said ring, upright, mid-spin with a precise fingertip
- I’ve seen the “Ring Tosser” – husbands who lightly toss their ring, with the perfect arch, to land it in an empty cup across a table
- I’ve seen the “Pencil Slider” – husbands who slide the ring off the finger and onto a pen or pencil, only to see-saw the pencil back and forth or spin the ring round and round, as they are deep in thought (on occassion flinging it across the room into the little dust pile in the corner)
But, what I had never seen, at least not until last summer… was the unique game of tossing the ring into the deep end of a 7 ft pool. This game was a wonderful way to show the children in the pool, how you can retrieve it from the bottom in just one breath.
No, I’m not making this up. My hubby all on his own, decided to play “fetch” with himself, in our pool, using his wedding ring… just to impress a 5 year old!
Men seem to have the unique ability to make everything into some sort of game. They often use items that are nearest to them, that require the least amount of effort and that oftentimes might be considered illogical to those of us who are not male. This is just another example that reinforces my Fun Theory. If you can make something simple into something fun and amusing, men will pay attention.
Men can almost always use simple, every-day items to amuse themselves. It’s a talent that many women lack. And, from what I can see, it’s learned at a very young age. My nephew has now learned that getting married is a wonderful thing because you will get to wear a full time, pool toy!
I’d have to surmise, that it’s also why it can be so incredibly exciting to toss stuff from half way across the room into a trash can. And, a reason to celebrate “making the shot” by hooting & hollering and dancing around like a moron. From my perspective it’s just another way to splatter stuff all over the walls as it’s flying through the house. Or, in the case of the wedding ring, a great way to get a small item stuck in the filter at the bottom of the pool!
But as hubby says…. “this is just another thing that you’ll never understand”.
And, you know what? He’s right!
Hello there.
Beloved and I have been married for over 30 years now and he has a quirky sense of humor like your partner.
When it comes to jewelery I have lots of it and wear none at all. No kidding! I’m the least sentimental woman I have ever known. So you can imagine my the reaction our family members had when we put our wedding rings in the jewelry box after the service and have rarely worn them since.
I’ve had girlfriends wax philosophical about the symbolic meaning of wedding rings, while roll my eyes. They tell me they feel “naked” without their rings and then I always laugh and say I feel over-dressed when I’m wearing mine. 😀

Timethief… The beauty of my hubby is that he can appreciate my silliness and I can laugh at his quirks… it makes for far more laughter than arguments! And, while have appreciation for some things sentimental.. no one would EVER describe me as “sentimental” either!

It’s funny because I was going to mention that I have seen men use them to open beer bottles, but it looks like Katie beat me to that comment. I have never asked my husband if he uses his ring this way, because somethings are better left unknown to keep the peace.
I have seen my husband spin his ring, and after 16 years of marriage almost all the detailing has worn off his ring and it almost looks like a totally plain band it’s so worn down. Incidentally, he originally wanted a plain band, so I guess he knows his habits better than I do. I of course take perfect care of my ring, no ring tosses for this woman.
