Sleep deprivation & stress could be a recipe for disaster when it comes to marital harmony, unless you are in a situation that allows you to bond with your spouse and work together to push your way through tough circumstances.

Most times, when I’m writing a blog post for The Hubby Diaries, I write tongue in cheek humor (ok, maybe not always tongue in cheek!) about hubby’s listening skills or perhaps his inability to locate our recycling bin.   But, in the midst of all my sarcasm, hubby really is a great guy.  Even on those days when I want to give him a Swift Kick In The Butt,  as I raise my foot towards his derriere, it’s raised with love.

If you’re wondering why I’ve disappeared for weeks and now I’ve come back sort of mushy… please let me explain.  And, I promise… mushy only goes so far with me, and hubby is still hubby.  So, even though I may be dipping my toe into the water of an entirely different blog post, rest assured that I still continue to swim in the same pool and, even in the midst of mushiness, hubby can still make me shake my head and wonder what exactly is going on in his mind.

Anywho…..

Let me bring you up to speed and share with you a story about why I’ve disappeared for the last couple of weeks.   In some past posts, I alluded to some secretive stuff that hubby & I had going on.  And, while I cannot divulge all details, I would like to explain why I’ve fallen off the face of the earth.

Hubby & I had the opportunity to participate in a brand new HGTV series that will start airing in April.  The preparation, planning & filming of this show literally consumed all of our time for weeks.  In my opinion, it has potential to be reality tv at it’s best.  It put us in situations that tested our will, our perseverance & our patience.  It was a renovation that brought out the best & the worst in us.  And, all of it was wonderfully captured on camera for all of America to see.  We have no idea how it will all be edited so we have no idea how we’ll come across on TV but, suffice to say, they have enough footage to make us look pretty much any way they want.

If any of you have ever done a massive renovation, then you know how trying it can be on a relationship: the disagreements, the stress and the problems that inevitably arise.  Then imagine adding in a full camera crew and a 3 day timeline.  Add to this barely any sleep and a competition that pushes you close to (if not beyond) your breaking point.  Yes, that’s how hubby & I spent the last 2 weeks.   I’m happy to report that not only did we make it through this experience without killing each other (although there were surely moments of snapping at each other – sort of inevitable when you are only getting 2 hours of sleep each night).  But, we came out of this experience closer than we’ve ever been.  It’s amazing how your relationship can grow when you are forced to work together, as a team, towards a common goal.  When you need to be strong while your partner is weak. When you realize that it’s the 2 of you against the world.

As I sit here in our newly renovated room, I’m tremendously proud of what we accomplished.  I’m amazed at how well we worked together.  And, I feel much, much closer to hubby.  All-in-all, a worthwhile experience…. Even if it did indeed prove that we aren’t nearly as handy as we would like to believe.   And, that my dear hubby has a “Ham Switch”…..

A “ham switch”, you ask????  Why yes, a Ham Switch…. And you’ll just have to come back on another day to find out exactly what that is……

You may have seen this before but I just received it today in an email  from a  friend, and I thought it was funny enough to share.

Since my dear hubby works in IT, I find this incredibly relevant.   If you read my post about what changes when you get married you’ll know that “upgrading” a boyfriend to a husband does indeed present some interesting challenges.

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as  NBA 5.0, NFL 3.0 and Golf Clubs 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.

Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

DEAR DESPERATE,

First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system.

Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme.html, try to download Tears 6.2, and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If those applications work as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5.

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1.

Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Farting and Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0-program. This is an unsupported application and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Cooking 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7.

I’ve taken the liberty of linking many pieces of this email to older posts about hubby.   At first glance, you may have thought that “Desperate” could be me.  I can assure you it’s not BUT, it just goes to show that it could potentially be any of us.

And, like most other computer users out there.. after you realize that your operating system is just not working like it used to you have 2 choices: either throw the computer out the window or, start rebuilding your system to function the way you need it to….. much like way we need to treat many men!!

I hope you enjoyed!
